Limit on Number of Accounts for Microsoft Authenticator Cloud Backup

Hello,

I would like to know if there is a limit to the number of accounts that can be added to Microsoft Authenticator when enabling cloud backup.

Recently, while trying to enable cloud backup, I encountered an error stating that the "number of accounts that can be backed up limit exceeded." Can you clarify what the maximum limit is for accounts that can be backed up and if there are any workarounds for this issue?

I believe the backup allocation on OneDrive restricts the backup size.

I'm a 365 Administrator for over 100 365 tenants and have 2FA via MS Authenticator for each and every one of them.

Once I got over 105 tenant logins I cannot backup either.

I'd love to keep using MS Authenticator but if I swich phones in this state I'm going to lose some logins.

Same query here. I've also got more than 100 entries due to managing multiple tenants. Should be a work around for the 5MB file size limit considering the vastly larger capacity available on my business class OneDrive account.

There is no hard limit per say on the number of accounts that can be backed up. But please do check the unutilised storage in your one drive associated account.

The free limit is 5gb and you can expand it by purchasing M365 subscription.

You may consider removing unused accounts or clearing up the storage space.

Actually I have enough storage and I believe tye back file doesn't even exceed 500mb

To resolve this issue permanently, we need to collect diagnostics/logs data and investigate it to find the root cause of the error.

Below are the steps,

In your authenticator app, go to options (3 vertical dots) -> send feedback -> Having trouble?

select the issue in the first column, provide the description, include your contact email address.

Hi Ankush I lodged feedback using app also I contacted Microsoft support, though the troubleshooting they suggested was already performed during our discussion but I got a temporary solution which is to remove few entries and then back up went successful but after I add removed entries again I get the same issue.

Same here, on both phones with nearly identical tokens:

Main device: Google Pixel 7a, Android 15, newest patch level 2024-12-05,
Authenticator App 6.2412.8087

Fallback device: Samsung Galaxy A35 5G, Android 14, newest patch level 2024-11-01,
Authenticator backup restored there when I still had < 100 entries, manually added since them new tokens always on both phones in parallel, so the number of entries is quite the same. Same issue on Galaxy.

Both using the same Google and Microsoft accounts and the same apps. No hacks, always newest patch level.

Microsoft 365 Enterprise license, no additional personal license, but 17.8 of 40 GB free on my OneDrive Personal.

The malfunction not being able to backup started months ago as soon as I had too many tokens configured within authenticator. It then still worked on the Galaxy where I had one or two entries less that day.
