Audit and Control Management Server 2013 - "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect" error

You may receive the following error when trying to launch the ACM Service Manager on an application server running Audit and Control Management Server 2013:

 

 

The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.

The error can occur if Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86) has not been installed. This application is required on the application server per the installation documentation:

After installing the application, you should be able to open the ACM Service Manager successfully.
