We have received a service health advisory from Microsoft with ID "PTC3-9V8" regarding the Serverless compute transition on Azure Databricks by 24 March 2025. After going through the advisory, we have few queries which we want to understand.

Kindly help regarding the below queries:

  1. How we can check if our existing Azure databricks resources are serverless enabled or not? Or are they eligible workspaces for serverless compute?
  2. Is there anything we need to perform before or after 24th March on the existing Azure databricks workspace from our end regarding this enablement?
  3. As mentioned the feature is in public preview, so do we need to wait for its GA release?
  4. Is this feature only applicable for Premium tier Azure Databricks resources?
  5. What are these "Serverless budget policies for tag enforcement (preview)" & "Serverless egress control (preview)"

    Hi @Chakraborty, Shubham
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A platform and thanks for posting your query here.

I can help you with your queries regarding Serverless compute in Azure Databricks:

How we can check if our existing Azure databricks resources are serverless enabled or not? Or are they eligible workspaces for serverless compute?

You can check in the Azure Databricks workspace settings under the Compute tab to see if you have the option for Serverless SQL warehouses or Serverless Jobs compute.

Is there anything we need to perform before or after 24th March on the existing Azure databricks workspace from our end regarding this enablement?

    1. If your workspace is already using Serverless compute, no action is needed.
    2. If your workspace is eligible but not yet using Serverless compute, you may need to enable it manually.
    3. Microsoft may automatically enable it on some workspaces after the deadline, so it’s best to review your settings.

As mentioned, the feature is in public preview, so do we need to wait for its GA release?

While the feature is in public preview, you can start exploring and testing the Serverless compute capabilities on Azure Databricks. It's recommended to evaluate the feature in your environment and provide feedback to Microsoft during the preview phase. You can decide whether to wait for the general availability (GA) release based on your organization's requirements and readiness.

Is this feature only applicable for Premium tier Azure Databricks resources?

Yes, currently, Serverless compute is available only for Premium and higher-tier Azure Databricks plans. If you're on the Standard tier, you may not have access.

What are these "Serverless budget policies for tag enforcement (preview)" & "Serverless egress control (preview)"

    • Serverless budget policies for tag enforcement (preview): Helps control costs by applying budget rules based on resource tags.
    • Serverless egress control (preview): Adds network security by restricting data movement outside a specific region or network.

For more detailed information, please refer to the Azure Databricks documentation:

Hope this helps. Do let us know if you any further queries.
