I have 840 GB of data in an Azure File Share Cool Tier that I want to download to a local machine and then delete the File Share. What is the most cost efficient way to accomplish this? Change to Transaction Optimized Tier, and then download? Or just download from the cool tier. Will be using the Azure Storage Manager.

    Hi Charlie Dennison

To download and delete your Azure File Share Cool Tier data in the most cost-efficient way follow the below steps that may help you.

Downloading data directly from the Cool Tier is generally more cost-effective than changing to the Transaction Optimized Tier. The Cool Tier has lower storage costs, but higher transaction costs compared to the Transaction Optimized Tier. Since you are downloading a large amount of data (840 GB), the transaction costs will be higher, but overall, it will still be less expensive than changing tiers.

Use Azure Storage Explorer to download the data from the Cool Tier to your local machine. Azure Storage Explorer is a free tool that allows you to manage your Azure storage accounts and download data efficiently.

    Delete the File Share:
After downloading the data, you can delete the Azure File Share to stop paying storage. Deleting the file share will remove all data and any related costs.

    • After downloading the data, right-click on the file share in Azure Storage Explorer.
    • Select "Delete" to remove the file share and stop incurring storage costs.
