Impact of Public IP Basic SKU Retirement on SBC DNS Records

Is there any expected impact on DNS record sets pointing to Microsoft public IPs for our SBC server due to the retirement of the Public IP Basic SKU? We currently do not have any public IPs in Azure, but I want to confirm this before I just ignore the Basic SKU Retirement message.

    Hi Ryan Goodman

    Greetings!

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A Platform. Thank you for reaching out & I hope you are doing well.

No, this retirement will not impact your existing or new deployments on CSES. This means that you can still create and use Basic SKU public IPs for CSES deployments. However, we advise using Standard SKU on ARM native resources (those that do not depend on CSES) when possible, because Standard has more advantages than Basic.

    Refer: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-network/ip-services/public-ip-basic-upgrade-guidance#will-the-basic-sku-public-ip-retirement-impact-cloud-services-extended-support-cses-deployments

    Refer: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/1025889/action-required-upgrade-from-basic-to-standard-sku

    • Since you do not currently have any public IPs in Azure, you will not be affected by the retirement of Basic SKU public IPs.
    • If you plan to deploy public IPs in the future, you will need to use Standard SKU public IPs, which offer enhanced features and security.

This is to notify that users will not be able to use basic SKU IP addresses after 30 September 2025. And yes, if not upgraded to Standard SKU, these IP Addresses will become unusable and will no longer be supported.

NOTE: You can continue to use your existing Basic IP address till the above date. However, you will not be able to create new basic IP addresses after 31 March 2025

You can upgrade your existing basic IP address to standard by following: Upgrade a public IP (if you do not want the IP to change).

For now, you can safely ignore the Basic SKU retirement message since it does not apply to your current setup. However, keep in mind the upcoming changes if you plan to use public IPs in Azure in the future.

    Hope this clarifies!
