With the general availability of this new Data Governance solution, we're excited to share the new pricing model which will go into effect on January 6, 2025 for all customers using the new Microsoft Purview Unified Catalog service. Microsoft designed this model with the business in mind, making it easy for the business to run and manage their modern data governance practice, while maintaining transparency and control over costs. This approach eliminates exposing technical complexities to customers via complex pricing constructs which are hard to track, manage, and explain and instead centers around a value exchange anchored on the modern data governance practice.
Pricing explained
There are two pricing components to support your modern data governance practice and together these are used as complementary levers to run your practice and manage your costs.
Unified Catalog
The Unified Catalog feature provides a rich set of capabilities for both data stewards and data consumers across the organization. Data stewards can curate and govern their data estate and set governance policies on them that can scale in a federated data estate. Data consumers can consume, view, access, and understand diverse sets of data without the need for any technical intervention. A well curated data product catalog enables them to consume the more critical and golden source of data through a search and browse experience. For these set of rich capabilities, there's a single meter, Unified Catalog, that is initiated when customers govern unique data assets. Data assets such as tables, views, AI models, semantic models, and many others that are linked to governance concepts in the product, such as data products and critical data elements, are counted as governed assets. Assets that are collected in the Purview Data Map, but not linked to the governance concepts aren't counted as governed assets.
For example, if an organization has 5,000 tables, views, stored procedures, resource sets, and AI models in their data map, while only 1,000 unique governed assets in Unified Catalog, the monthly cost, for 30-days, would be $500. The 4,000 assets that aren't linked to the data products or critical data elements aren't considered governed assets and therefore not counted. Unified Catalog managed assets are priced uniformly across regions. This pay-as-you-go model for a managed asset is prorated based on days governed within the monthly billing cycle.
See the table for US East pricing for Unified Catalog.
Feature | SKU | Pay-as-you-go Price (USD) |
---|---|---|
Unified Catalog | Standard | $0.0165 per asset per day or ~ $0.50 per month |

Data management
Purview Data Governance Enterprise Data Management meter is initiated when a customer runs data quality and health management actions on their governed data estate. Data management usage is billed based on the Data Governance Processing Unit (DGPU) pay-as-you-go meters. A DGPU is the amount of service performance consumed for 60 minutes and is available in three different performance options: Basic, standard, and advanced. The Basic SKU option is set as the default performance option until the customer selects a higher option like Standard or Advanced.
For example, if a customer runs 100 Data Management rules and controls in a single day, and each run produces 0.02 DGPU with the Basic SKU, then the total DGPU for that day would equal two DGPU, costing the customer $30. See the table for pricing for Data Health Management feature by SKU in US East pricing.
Feature | SKU | Pay-as-you-go Price (USD) |
---|---|---|
Data Health Management | Basic | $15 per Data Governance Processing Unit |
Data Health Management | Standard | $60 per Data Governance Processing Unit |
Data Health Management | Advanced | $240 per Data Governance Processing Unit |
