Microphone for teams on Linux not working

On an HP Zbook studio G5 running Mint 19.1
Plantronics C3320 headset plugged into a USB port (on the laptop, not on the G3 docking station)

The teams_1.2.00.32451_amd64.deb package installs fine, and the test call works as expected.
However when calling a coworker, all he hears is very bad static that gets louder when I speak.
Same problem when input is set to the builtin microphone.

In sound preference:
Device set to Plantronic Blackwire 3220 Series Digital Stereo Duplex (IEC958)
Input connector set to "Digital Input (S/PDIF)

In the Teams Settings->Devices, speaker and microphone are set to Plantronic Blackwire 3220 Series Digital Stereo Duplex (IEC958)

In my case it was not a permission issue.

The workaround for me was to select audio input before starting the call using Settings->Devices (from the Teams program menu), and never open the device chooser from within the call.

If you do open the device chooser from within the call you will lose the microphone and will not be able to re-enable it. Until you restart the program, of course.

Yes, from here on out all request for Teams meetings are going to be answered:

"Thanks for your invitation. The discussion you proposed is important to me, so let me propose that we do not use Teams.
Teams has not performed reliably. I cannot guarantee that my audio link will work and hence we strongly discourage the use of Teams for communication. We have found Zoom, Google Meeting, Skype, and Webex to work just fine. Please let us know if you wish to reschedule with one of those systems, or if you'd like me to schedule the meeting with google meeting."

    Feel free to use this.

Everyone else seems to have figured out how to have their system work with Ubuntu, but if MS doesn't care to put the work in, I have no inclination to waste my or my company's time on their products.

    configuration
    Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
    Teams 1.3.00.30857 (64 bits)
    using USB headphones with mic

Having this microphone issue for two days, I somehow solved the issue by going to Profile -> settings -> devices and selecting my computer built in mic, made a phone test call, asserted that I finally had sound and then switching back to my USB headphones mic. Teams for Linux is not reliable, I face microphone issues from time to time, exclusively with Teams

Similar issues on Ubuntu 20.04. I followed the suggestion here:
    https://wiki.debian.org/PulseAudio#Restarting_the_Pulseaudio_Daemon
under 'Missing playback devices or audio capture'...

    rm -r ~/.config/pulse /tmp/pulse-*
    pulseaudio --kill
    pulseaudio --start

    Now the microphone is working.

zoom runs smooth these days. They've fixed much of the Linux resource issues and the quality of video and audio is sharp even on my really spotty wifi.
Super user not required. As long as the legal team doesn't get after me for not using my work account, I'm going to be using zoom so as to not cause my customers any frustration.
