Using Language Studio using personal account

I am preparing for the AI-102 certification.

While following steps in https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/training/modules/create-question-answer-solution-ai-language/4-create-knowledge-base, it says use Language Studio to create Custom question answering project.

I am having a personal account to get experience for exam preparation.

Language Studio doesn't seem to allow personal account.

What is the alternative to follow this Module on Question Answering? Could you please update the Learn content appropriately?

I understand that you are trying to follow the AI-102 certification training but is unable to access Language Studio because it doesn’t support personal accounts. you need an alternative way to complete the training, please try the below steps to login,

Invite your personal account as a guest in a Microsoft Entra ID tenant. If you have access to an existing Entra ID (formerly Azure AD) organization, you can add your personal email as a guest user and grant it the necessary permissions. This allows you to use Language Studio while keeping your current subscription.

Create a free Microsoft Entra ID account and link it to your Azure subscription. Once set up, you can sign in to Azure Language Studio using this new work account.

Check access permissions in the Azure portal under Azure AI Services > Language Service and ensure the user has the necessary RBAC role assigned in the Access Control (IAM) section.

I am not clear yet how this is solving my problem. I do not have access to any work/school accounts.

I have set up Azure portal with the following info in order to try out the exercises given as part of Learning Paths recommended for AI-102 certification.

Name: Default Directory,

License : Microsoft Entra ID Free,

Primary domain: xxxxgmail.onmicrosoft.com

Could you please give clear, concise steps to follow to use Language Studio, if I have an account as given above?

Hi AnJo,

To use Azure Language Studio with your Microsoft Entra ID Free account, please follow these steps:

Ensure your account is linked to an active Azure subscription.

Sign in to the Azure Portal, search for "Subscriptions", and verify that you have an active subscription such as Free Trial or Pay-As-You-Go. If no subscription is found, create one through Azure Subscriptions.

Then assign the required permissions to your account. In the Azure Portal, navigate to Azure Active Directory → Users, select your account (xxxxgmail.onmicrosoft.com), and check if you have an assigned role.

Your account must have at least one of these roles Owner, Contributor, or Cognitive Services Contributor. If necessary, go to Access Control (IAM) and assign the Cognitive Services Contributor role.

Manually register for Azure Language Studio. Open Azure Language Studio and sign in with your xxxxgmail.onmicrosoft.com account. If access issues occur, click "Try Language Studio for Free" and follow the on-screen instructions. Alternatively, use Incognito Mode in your browser and attempt to sign in again.

Yes, Thank you for the answers and thanks for checking in.

Added a new user in Entra ID of the default directory and gave the user AI Administrator role (Administrator Role).

Assigned the user Cognitive Services Language Owner Role(IAM Role) for the Resource Group which has the Language Service.

With this new user I could login to Language Studio and with the IAM Role (step 2) the user has access to the AI Language Service Resource and could create new projects.

I want to ensure that user is assigned just enough privileges (principle of least privilege). I’d like to get feedback on whether the roles I’ve chosen are appropriate or if there are better alternatives.

User should have just enough privileges to use Language Studio to create Custom question answering project, test and deploy.

Could you please review the roles I’ve used in Steps 1 & 2 and recommend if these are the right choices?

You have assigned the AI Administrator role in Entra ID and the Cognitive Services Language Owner role at the resource group level, which provides broad access to manage Language Studio and related AI services.

To align with the principle of least privilege, consider adjusting the roles to grant only the necessary permissions. Instead of the AI Administrator role, assign the Cognitive Services Contributor role in Entra ID, which allows the user to manage AI resources without excessive administrative privileges.

Instead of assigning the Language Owner role at the resource group level, consider assigning the Cognitive Services User role if the user only needs access to the Language Service without modifying its configuration. If the user is required to create and manage Custom Question Answering projects, test, and deploy, the Cognitive Services Contributor role at the resource level should be sufficient. Additionally, using custom role definitions can help further restrict access based on specific actions, ensuring the user has just enough privileges to perform their tasks efficiently.
