Is it possible to rename an MS Purview instance?

According to the documentation below, it seems that it is not possible to have more than one instance of MS Purview per Azure Tenant:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/purview/legacy/create-microsoft-purview-portal

In the tenant in use, an instance was created with the wrong name, and there is no option to rename it.

An alternative would be to delete the current instance of MS Purview in the Azure Portal and create it again with the correct name. However, there is a significant amount of data in other Purview solutions (Audit, DLC, Information Protection, etc.) that is actively being used.

The questions are as follows:

  1. Is it possible to rename this instance of MS Purview via Azure Portal, PowerShell, etc.?
  2. If the decision is made to recreate it, will the existing data in the other solutions be deleted? If so, how can a backup of the current data be made and restored after creating the new instance?

    Hi @Luis Rodrigues

Greetings & Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum! Thanks for posting your query!

Is it possible to rename this instance of MS Purview via Azure Portal, PowerShell, etc.?

Currently, it is not possible to rename an MS Purview instance once it has been created. If you need to change the name, the only option is to delete the existing instance and create a new one with the desired name. However, this approach comes with significant considerations, especially regarding data management.

If the decision is made to recreate it, will the existing data in the other solutions be deleted? If so, how can a backup of the current data be made and restored after creating the new instance?

If you decide to recreate the instance, the existing data in other Purview solutions (like Audit, Data Loss Prevention, Information Protection, etc.) will not be automatically deleted, but you should be cautious. Deleting the MS Purview instance could lead to loss of configurations and connections associated with that instance.

To ensure that you do not lose any important data, it is advisable to back up your current configurations and any relevant data before proceeding with the deletion. Unfortunately, there is no built-in backup feature for MS Purview, so you may need to manually document your settings or export any necessary data.

After creating the new instance, you can restore your configurations and re-establish connections as needed. It’s essential to plan this process carefully to minimize disruption and data loss.

I hope this information helps. Please do let us know if you have any further queries.
