If two styles are part of the same multilevel list, you can reference a higher level number in a lower level number (a typical example is the "1, 1.1, 1.1.1, ..." numbering format). However, each style will reference a specific style, corresponding to a specific list level. In other words, there is no automated way to set up numbering in such a flexible way that you are hoping for.
Create a new style in word
· Create a new style named ‘Requirement #”
· Have the style visible and selectable in the cross reference list
Style format
o REQ-Paragraph Section #-incrementing # of req “requirement text”
- “REQ-“ is inserted for each req
- “Paragraph Section #” picks up the active section #
- “-“
- “incrementing # of the req starts at 001 and increments for each req e.g. 001, 002, 003…
Example
In Section 2.4.1
[Req-2.4.1-001] The system shall turn on the lights
In Section 2.5
[Req-2.5-001] The system shall turn off the lights
[Req-2.5-002] The system shall turn the lights green

You may be able to create a combination and save it as an AutoText entry.
