I have an Azure VM running Windows 2016 Datacenter, and the Windows Update just gives an error 0x8024000e with a Retry button. I have tried just about every solution I can find on line with no success.
Here is the last part of the log that was created by using the Get-WindowsUpdateLog PowerShell command:

Calum Halliday 1 Reputation point2020-03-23T14:45:44.64+00:00 I'm having the exact same issues, it's wasting hours of my time trying to resolve what should be a straight forward thing to do. I've got 2 DC's both built at the same time in Azure and they both have the same issue. I can manually install updates but can't get windows updates to run as expected. It's so frustrating that Microsoft have still not resolved basic problems with Windows Updates and don't seem to have a solution for this. I've spent hours searching to finds a fix for this and tried everything possible all of DISM commands, resetting windows update multiple times, SFC /SCANNOW and nothing works.

Solution was simple - VM size was too small - updates were running out of RAM.
Resized VM from B2s to B2ms, basically changing RAM from 4 GB to 8 GB.
Updates started running as expected. -
