Remarks

The ValidationSummary control displays a consolidated list of validation errors for a given container. By default, it will display both object and property level errors. The Errors collection contains all errors added to the ValidationSummary. An individual error is represented by a ValidationSummaryItem. You can specify the type of errors displayed by setting the Filter property to one of the ValidationSummaryFilters enumeration values. For example, if property level errors are already displayed by individual controls on the form, you can set the ValidationSummary to only display object level errors. The DisplayedErrors collection contains all the errors that match the display Filter.

By default, when an error message is selected in the ValidationSummary, it attempts to set focus on the control where the error originated. You can disable this behavior by setting the FocusControlsOnClick property to false. Alternatively, you can change the focusing behavior by overriding the OnFocusingInvalidControl method or handling the FocusingInvalidControl event.

The ValidationSummary receives the BindingValidationError events of its parent container. This allows it to display property level validation errors for a form. For each BindingValidationError received by the ValidationSummary, the following happens:

Object level errors are not automatically added to the Errors collection. A ValidationSummaryItem that represents an object level error must be added to the collection by your application code.

NoteNote:

The Silverlight ValidationSummary control is only available as part of the libraries in the Silverlight Software Development Kit (SDK). For more information, see the Silverlight Tools.

Customizing the ValidationSummary Control

You can change the appearance of individual errors in the summary list by setting the ErrorStyle property to a custom Style. You can change the appearance of the error list by setting the SummaryListBoxStyle property. By default, the Header displays an icon and the number of errors currently displayed. You can set the header text by assigning a string to the Header property. To create a custom header, you can define a DataTemplate and assign it to the HeaderTemplate property.

To apply the same property settings to multiple ValidationSummary controls, use the Style property. To change the visual structure and visual behavior of a ValidationSummary, copy and modify its default style and template. For more information, see Control Customization.

Dependency properties for this control might be set by the default style of the control. If a dependency property for a ValidationSummary is set by its default style, the property might change from its default value when the ValidationSummary appears in the application. For more information, see Dependency Property Value Precedence. You can get the default style and template for ValidationSummary from ValidationSummary Styles and Templates.

NoteNote:

Setting a visual property will only have an effect if that property is both present in ValidationSummary control's default template and is set by using a TemplateBinding. You can find a list of visual properties in the "Changing the Visual Structure of a Control" section of Customizing the Appearance of an Existing Control by Using a ControlTemplate.

Examples

The following example demonstrates a ValidationSummary control that displays errors for three TextBox controls on a form. The validation rules are specified in attributes in the Customer class.
