Start or Stop an Application Pool (IIS 7)
Applies To: Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista
Stopping an application pool causes the Windows Process Activation Service (WAS) to shut down all running worker processes serving that application pool. WAS does not restart these worker processes. An administrator must restart all stopped application pools. All applications routed to a stopped application pool receive 503 Service Unavailable errors.

To start or stop an application pool
You can perform this procedure by using the user interface (UI), by running Appcmd.exe commands in a command-line window, by editing configuration files directly, or by writing WMI scripts.
User Interface
To use the UI
Open IIS Manager. For information about opening IIS Manager, see Open IIS Manager (IIS 7).
In the Connections pane, expand the server node and click Application Pools.
On the Application Pools page, select the application pool you want to start or stop.
In the Actions pane, use one of the following procedures:
Click Start to start the application pool.
Click Stop to stop the application pool.
Command Line
To start an application pool, use the following syntax:
**appcmd start apppool /apppool.name:**string
The variable string is the name of the application pool that you want to start. For example, to start an application pool named Marketing, type the following at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:
appcmd start apppool /apppool.name:Marketing
To stop an application pool, use the following syntax:
**appcmd stop apppool /apppool.name:**string
The variable string is the name of the application pool that you want to stop. For example, to stop an application pool named Marketing, type the following at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:
appcmd stop apppool /apppool.name:Marketing
