Checklist: Setting up Remote Storage

Remote Storage is not installed by default when you run Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition Setup, Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition Setup, or Setup for the 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition, or Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition. You can select Remote Storage for installation during Setup, or you can manually install Remote Storage through Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.

Step Reference

Log on to the local computer with administrative credentials.

Default local groups.

Verify that you have a supported tape or disk library and that Removable Storage can detect this library. Remote Storage can use any magneto-optical disk or 4mm, 8mm, or DLT tape library.

Using Removable Storage, verify that a sufficient number of tapes or magneto-optical disks for Remote Storage to use are assigned to either the Free or Remote Storage media pool.

View or set Removable Storage properties.

Verify that the volumes that will be managed have been formatted with the NTFS file system for Windows 2000 or the Windows Server 2003 family.

If you intend to use data compression, compress the volume data beforehand.

Install Remote Storage and start the Remote Storage Setup wizard.

Set up Remote Storage.

To maintain security, log out, log back in using an account in a different security group, and run Remote Storage as an administrator. To do this, right-click Remote Storage, click Run as, and choose an account in the Administrators group.

Access Control.

Select volumes for management.

Follow the Remote Storage Setup Wizard.

Set the free-space level for volumes that you choose to manage.

Follow the Remote Storage Setup Wizard.

Set the criteria for copying files to remote storage.

Follow the Remote Storage Setup Wizard.

Select the type of tape or disk to use for remote storage.

Follow the Remote Storage Setup Wizard.

Set the file-copy schedule.

Follow the Remote Storage Setup Wizard.

Set the number of media copies that you want to make.

Set the number of media copies.
