ActiveSync OS Design Development (Windows CE 5.0)

Send Feedback

The ActiveSync functionality in Microsoft Windows CE provides support for synchronizing data between a Windows-based desktop computer and Windows CE–based devices. Using time stamps and user preferences, the synchronization process tracks data changes on both computers, and then transfers the appropriate data so that each computer has the most recent versions. Outdated or unwanted data is discarded.

OS Design Information

The following table shows operating system design information for ActiveSync.

Concept Description
Dependencies Desktop side Microsoft ActiveSync® version 3.5 or later is required.
Hardware considerations A serial or USB cable connection is needed for the first synchronization. Subsequent synchronizations can also use IrDA or Ethernet connections.

Modules and Components

The following table shows the components and modules that implement ActiveSync.

Item Module Component
Base Synchronization systemcpl, eventrst, rapisrv, repllog, rra_stm None
File Synchronization cefobj None
Mail and PIM (POOM) synchronization pegobj None
Installer and Uninstaller wceload, unload None

ActiveSync Implementation Considerations

The following table shows the Sysgen variables that control ActiveSync.

Sysgen variable Description
SYSGEN_AS_BASE Adds base synchronization components and the application installer and uninstaller.
SYSGEN_AS_FILE Adds the file synchronization component.
SYSGEN_AS_MAIL Adds synchronization for Inbox mail component.
SYSGEN_AS_PIM Adds synchronization for Inbox contacts, tasks, and appointments.

By default, Repllog.exe is set up to be notified of any communications port events (NOTIFICATION_EVENT_RS232_DETECTED). If the driver sends this event, Repllog.exe starts automatically with the default parameters, as defined in the following section of datasync.db.

; @CESYSGEN IF DATASYNC_MODULES_REPLLOG
Record :
Field : 0001001f : "repllog.exe"
Field : 0002001f : "AppRunAtRs232Detect"
Field : 00030013 : 9
End
; @CESYSGEN ENDIF
