Emulator (Windows CE 5.0)
The Emulator is a tool that mimics the behavior of a Microsoft® Windows® CE–based hardware platform. With the Emulator, you can test a run-time image by using software that mimics hardware. For information about creating an OS design that is compatible with the Emulator, see Creating an Emulator-compatible OS Design.
The Emulator provides a virtual hardware platform that you can use to test applications on your Windows CE–based run-time image.
You can specify a screen resolution for the Emulator. You can also include a skin for the Emulator. An Emulator skin changes the appearance and functionality of the graphical user interface (GUI) for the Emulator. For information about the skin for the Emulator, see Emulator Skin.
Host-key combinations provide special functionality in the Emulator. Using certain key combinations, you can control the operation of the Emulator. For more information, see Emulator Key Combinations.
Each instance of Platform Builder can support one instance of the Emulator. If the Emulator is running in an instance of Platform Builder, to download a new run-time image to the Emulator you must either exit the Emulator or start a second instance of Platform Builder. For information about downloading a run-time image to the Emulator, see Downloading a Run-Time Image to the x86 Emulator.
Note The Emulator does not mimic hardware performance. The performance of the Emulator depends on the speed of your CPU and the amount of system memory in your development workstation. You may encounter slower performance with the Emulator than with a hardware platform running the same application
