Standardmäßig wird der Signalton mit einer Frequenz von 800 Hertz für eine Dauer von 200 Millisekunden wiedergegeben.
Beep umschließt einen Aufruf der Windows-Signaltonfunktion. Ob Beep unter Windows-Versionen vor Windows 7 ein Sound erzeugt wird, hängt vom Vorhandensein eines programmierbaren Intervalltimerchips mit 8254 ab. Ab Windows 7 hängt dies vom Standard-Soundgerät ab.
