In a previous tip I described how to improve visual performance in Visual Studio 2010:

Now let's look at Visual Studio 2008.  You can change the animation speed of tool windows in VS2008 but why would you want to do this?  Well, you can get a performance boost by speeding up or completely turning off the animation.  Just go to Tools -> Options -> Environment -> General and locate the "Animate environment tools" option:

I suggest turning this feature off to begin with to see if there are any performance improvements.  Then, if you want your animations back, turn it back on and set the slider to the far right-hand side (fastest speed) then adjust it back to the left, as you test the performance, to see what the best setting is for you.
