CleanSPL for Vista/Server 2008?

In the Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 timeframe, we used to have a tool called CleanSPL.exe (Clean Spooler) to reset the Print Spooler on Windows XP/Server 2003 to the original state.

This was needed to fix issues when you had a small number of print queues (let’s say less than 10 print queues) or didn’t have time to troubleshoot the problem at hand.

Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools

Since Vista/Server 2008 we don't ship the "Resource Kit Tools" some of you might be wondering if the CleanSPL.exe is still a good tool to use?

No it is not, please go ahead and retire your CleanSPL.exe copies.

Is it backwards compatible with Windows XP and Windows Server 2003?

Yes, it is backwards compatible with Windows XP and Server 2003.

We have a better method of resetting the Print Spooler to the original state:

2000007 Fix printing problems by resetting the print spooler

https://support.microsoft.com/?id=2000007

Once you run this tool, go to your printer manufacturer website and download the latest and greatest driver.

Just ran into this problem too on Windows 7.  Cleanspl fails with a "not for this version" error message.  Was hoping to find that KB article about resetting the spooler, but the link is broken.
