Alan Wake--The Power of Light

Alan Wake has been a long time coming, but yesterday's Microsoft Press Briefing was its coming out party.

Developer Remedy demoed the game live, and shocked many (myself included) with just how action-packed the game really is. Yes, it looks gorgeous, yes, the story is an enormous priority, and yes, cinematics blend seamlessly with gameplay, but it was the third-person action that took center stage, as Alan fought through shadowy creatures and unseen forces, wielding a flashlight, pistol, and shotgun.

While the nature of Alan Wake's enemies aren't entirely clear, their aversion to light was. Indeed, it appears light will play a central role in Alan's survival. Playing the beam of his flashlight on enemy stunned the creature, buying him enough time to beat it back with a few pistol shots. Likewise, by igniting a signal flare and brandishing it overhead, Alan sent crowds of enemies recoiling, allowing him to rush through to safety.

Perhaps best of all, this first look at Alan Wake in playable form assures the game is alive and well and on track for its 2010 release.
