SharePoint Server 2013: Drag and drop contents to Library

To have the drag and drop feature to SharePoint Server 2013, here are the scenario or requirements of Web browsers.

  • Internet Explorer 10
  • Internet Explorer 9 with Office 2013 Installed
  • Internet Explorer 8 with Office 2013 Installed
  • FireFox latest version
  • Chrome latest version

Hence, for IE 8 and IE 9, it must have Office 2013 installed on the machines, else the drag and drop feature will not be available.

I guess my question is why isn't the support built into IE 9 or added since with the release of SP 2013 IE 9 was the latest version of the browser?  It can't be a dependency on Office 2013 since this works with Firefox and Chrome.  A lot of businesses can't upgrade on the fly to the latest browsers due to compatability issues with 3rd party products which we require testing.  I'm trying to understand what is "missing" in IE 9.

My guess is that IE9 doesn't implement HTML5 drag 'n' drop

Is it possible to install an add-on manually to IE9 so it can work with office 2010, instead of having 2013 installed?
