Any advice on loading Windows 8 into a Virtual PC? ;)Anonymous
September 13, 2011
Hi Ben, I've tried to install both the 64bit & 32bit preview OSs in a Windows 7 Virtual PC with 2048MB Ram and dynamic VHDs, on an Intel Core 2 Q6600 2.4GHz 64-bit processor but they both fail. The 64bit fails with 0xc000035a ("This 64-bit application couldn't load because your PC doesn't have a 64-but processor.") The 32bit fails with the "new" bluescreen HAL_INITIALIZATION_FAILED error. :-( Any advice to get these running under Win 7 VPC?Anonymous

I tried this on VMWare and got that same error about a 64 bit processor. I had to go into the bios and look in the Security Virtualization and Enable Virtual Technology. Then I at least got past that. Now I get *** VMware Player internal monitor error *** vcpu-0:NOT_IMPLEMENTED vmcore/vmm/intr/apic.c:1903 I have not tried it in Virtual PC yet.Anonymous

Today I have downloaded Windows 8 developer edition & tried to install Windows 8 on VMware Workstation 7.1, but it fails with below error, "vcpu-0:NOT_IMPLEMENTED vmcore/vmm/intr/apic.c" Solution for above error is to wait for VMware Workstation 8 which is going to launch in coming days or to install Windows 8 under VirtualBox 4.1. www.mytricks.in/.../guide-install-windows-8-developer.htmlAnonymous

run it as Native boot from a VHD: www.hanselman.com/.../GuideToInstallingAndBootingWindows8DeveloperPreviewOffAVHDVirtualHardDisk.aspx or use VirtualBox (NX/PAE, IO APIC enabled, 2 Cores assigned) or VMWare Workstation 8.Anonymous

You can try Virtualbox (http://www.virtualbox.org), and got Windows 8 developer preview64 bit installed on 64 bit machine (win 7).Anonymous

Really makes you wonder. Win7 runs in VPC, why not Win8? What does this mean for the "Win8 runs on Win7 hardware" claim?Anonymous

Hello. I also tried to install the current version of the future Windows 8 on my home outdated computer but fully compatible with Windows 7 (Pentium 4 with 2 GB RAM) on Virtual PC 2007 SP1 but it fails at setup... Of course, I tried to install the 32-bit version (as Virtual PC cannot run 64-bit operating system as client) but there is no way to install the OS inside the virtual machine ; at least with Microsoft Virtual PC. By contrast, Windows 7 and Vista can run on my computer inside a virtual machine without compatibility issue (although Windows 7 ran very slow inside a virtual machine due to the lack of hardware Virtualization support) I believed the problem is related to my home computer but, apparently, it is related to Virtual PC itself... As Microsoft claims Windows 8 runs on any computer compatible with Windows 7, Windows 8 should run on any computer faster than an Atom single core (like my ancient Pentium) @ Ben Armstrong > Is there a trick to force the install of Windows 8 inside a virtual machine (preferably with Virtual PC 2007 SP1) ? Thank you.Anonymous

GUYS, TO FIX THE "This 64-bit application couldn't load because your PC doesn't have a 64-but processor." ERROR... GO INTO YOUR BIOS AND LOOK FOR SOMETHING IN YOUR CPU SETTINGS CALLED EITHER "VIRTUALIZTION" OR "HARDWARE VIRTUALIZATION" AND ENABLE IT. THEN INSTALL WIN8 ON VIRTUALBOX NOT VMWARE... Sorry for caps, I had this problem too and took a sec to fix it. but that was the fix and i just want people to see it! lol.Anonymous

Hmmm... so everybody here on the Virtual PC blog is using VirtualBox or VMWare to create a Windows 8 virtual machine? :-) Perhaps Ben can post an update about if/when it will work on Windows Virtual PC?Anonymous

@Sajjad your PC is too old. According to the docu ( support.euro.dell.com/.../specs.htm ) you have a integrated GPU inside the Intel 865G chipset. This chipset doesn't support DirectX9 and so there are no WDDM drivers and the XP drivers (XDDM) are no longer supported in Win8. So stay at XP or buy a new PC with a DirectX 11 GPU.Anonymous

by the look of all thread, no way vpc will support w8 preview, and people more interested using vmware or virtualbox then hyper-v, am I or microsoft missing some trend here?
