Moving from VMware to Hyper-V

While I was at TechED Australia I had many people come up to me and ask me about the best way to migrate their VMware servers to Hyper-V on Windows Server 2012.  I spent a lot of time talking about the fact that System Center Virtual Machine Manager provides this functionality – and is great for large scale migrations.

For people without System Center Virtual Machine Manager – or who are wanting to perform smaller migrations of virtual machines – we now have a free stand-alone tool for moving virtual machines from VMware to Hyper-V.

You can read more about it over on the Virtualization team blog – including the download details – here: https://blogs.technet.com/b/virtualization/archive/2012/09/18/migrate-virtual-machines-from-a-vmware-environment-to-hyper-v-in-windows-server-2012-using-a-free-simple-standalone-tool.aspx

Cheers,
Ben

Hi Ben I’ve always been a great supporter of Microsoft virtualisation technologies. I’m at a point in my company were I’m able to move from VMware to Hyper-V. Unfortunately when I move some of my servers from VMware to Hyper-V the HAL changes so dramatically that the software on the Server Stops functioning. Allot of these software packages is bound to the hardware in some way. If I can’t get a way around this problem I’ll be forced to install ESXi5.1 rather than Hyper-V 2012 . I’ve even tried to run ESXi5.1 inside of my Hyper-V servers as a work around but VMware doesn’t support the Hyper-V network cards (both modern and legacy). If anyone has a solution to this problem please help I’m desperate. Thank you, Thomas

The tool is great (simple and everything), but it does not support Windows Server 2012 guests (???) nor vSphere 5.1 hosts. And VMM does not support vSphere 5.1 VMs also. Is there any tool for such conversion? Thanks!
