How to fix incorrect logon information for Windows XP mode

It is possible to get into a state where Windows XP mode stores the wrong logon information.

There are a couple of ways to hit this problem – but the most common cause is because you have changed your password inside Windows XP.  The result is that when you start Windows XP mode you see the following error message:

Cred1

After getting this error message you then have to type in your password to logon.  Unfortunately this will not fix itself automatically.  Fortunately it is not too difficult to fix manually.

The core problem is that Windows Virtual PC has a saved copy of your old logon information – and this information needs to be updated.

To do this you will need to:

  1. Stop the virtual machine

  2. Open the settings for the virtual machine

  3. Go to the Logon Credentials page

You should see a user name on this page:
    Cred2

  4. Click on Delete saved credentials

This should cause the user name field to be cleared:
    Cred3

  5. Start the virtual machine

You should be prompted for your logon information:
    cred4

Make sure that you check the option to Remember my credentials:
    cred5

Now your Windows XP mode should logon automatically for you again.

Cheers,
Ben

Can you blog about troubleshooting steps to fix if the auto-publish feature doesn't work? On many of my XP Mode computers, auto publish stops working. May it has something to do with WMI?

How do I open the Settings for the Virtual Machine?  Please help, as I've somehow locked myself out of the XP Mode, and I do not want to lose the data.

I have the same symptoms you've described however when I go to the credentials, it says NONE so there is nothing to clear. Do you have additional ideas for me.  I would appreciate it.

This doesn't work in my case because my virtual XP does not have any saved credentials AND continues to ask for a password, which I never (knowingly) set.  I have tried my Windows 7 password and a blank password - no luck. How to escape from this?

I am getting this screen and I never added a password or user id name. It is already cleared and says none under the logon credentials. What do you suggest I do?

Thanks alot! this solved a headache for me! Although I cleared the registry [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogon] for everything it was still trying to login with my old credentials. Which was annoying because everytime you resize the window it asks for login again. But this solved it. Thanks! (And for thos who wonder how to access, just type "Virtual" in the start menu, select "Windows Virtual PC". Select Windows XP Mode and on the toolbar click Settings.

If you never set up a password to begin with, then what do you do?  I don't know what my password should be, since I never had one.

I keep going in circles here. Have the same problem as Dona in the 19 April 2012 post -- Logon credentials said "none" when I started and still says "none" after typing a password and checking "remember my credentials" as your last screen shot above.  When I OK as in the last screen shot, I get back to the first screen shot. The circle is complete and I can go around and around this circle forever. What is missing here? Have also repeatedly tried the F8 trick of trying to get to safe mode without success. The odd thing is that everything was working fine earlier in the day without needing a password since I never created one.

This didn't help. AT ALL. It still asks for a User name and a Password! I did everything you said to do and nothing!

You can temporarily use the "Administrator" account to logon... no password...Then either reset or remove the password on your normal account from there! If this doesn't work in normal mode, hit F8 during boot of XP VM, and do it in safe mode...You should be able to access the XP admin account from there!Just resolved a customer issue this way!
