Week in government tech: Wireless Internet access comes to the A14 via 'white space' pilot

Remember how people used to talk about the Internet as an 'information superhighway' back in the early 1990s? Well that metaphor is coming to life on the A14 between Felixstowe and Cambridge, where wireless Internet access is being deployed. The service isn't just meant to a perk for commuters or a tool for sharing traffic information. It's a pilot test for 'white space' transmission, which uses space between television channels to send data, instead of a traditional mobile network.

The CESG Certified Professional initiative to help UK network security workers get accreditation is being extended by the GCHQ. The extension means that security workers in six key roles can apply for CCP Practitioner, Senior Practitioner and Lead Practitioner accreditations. "Since its launch last year, the CCP scheme has been warmly welcomed and endorsed by government cyber security professionals. With demand growing from industry to be part of the scheme, now is the right time to open up CCP and set a unified standard for cyber security professionals right across the UK," said Chloe Smith, minister for political and constitutional reform.

The changes, which are gradually being applied to different sections of the site, allow visitors faster access to information, a feature the National Archives was frequently requested by users. Mobile users make up about 1 in 5 visitors to the site, the National Archives says.

When talking with leadership about organisation change, it's useful to focus on enabling greater productivity and effectiveness, instead of dwelling on the disruption change can cause, writes Art Kleiner." We have to focus our attention on the aspiration, not the alteration. It’s not change that we’re looking for, but rather a kind of collective virtue," he writes.
