Microsoft CRM 4.0 Beta Available For Partners
Pity The Child...
Thanks to everyone who sent me details about the Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 (VPC) image now available for download from the Microsoft Dynamics partner portal (PartnerSource). Just in case you don't subscribe to the blogs of Philip Richardson, Ben Volmer or Ben Riga, you can download the VPC image here.
I would just like to point out a few key pieces of information:
- This is the Community Technology Preview 3 (CTP3) build of CRM 4.0 (version 4.0.7219.10; build date 22nd August 2008).
- Access to the VPC image is only available to Microsoft Dynamics partners via their normal PartnerSource login credentials.
- The VPC image contains is built on Windows Server 2003 and includes CRM 4.0, Office 2007, SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio 2005.
- The registration key for CRM 4.0 will expire 20th November 2007.
- The Windows Server 2003 license will expire on 30th November 2008.
- The image is designed for demonstration purposes only - you should not use this for proof-of-concept, pilot or production systems.
- Any customisations you make will not upgrade to the final release (RTM) version.

I understand that CRM 4.0 is due for release in December & acknowledge the existence of the VPC, but it there a Beta download of CRM 4.0 that I can install on a production server, as a Microsoft Partner? I am in the situation where I have moved to Exchange 2007 and have no 2003 servers left, so I don't want to put one back in to the organization just to install CRM 3.0. I'd rather go forward to 4.0, even if it is a beta.Anonymous

At the moment we are waiting for Release Canditate 0 (RC0) to ship. This is the version of Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 that you will be able to use in a production environment and upgrade to the final release (RTM) when available. The reason we have not made the CTP3 bits available is that this version is not supported and cannot be upgraded to RTM so we don't want this out in the field because it will almost certainly be usd incorrectly by one or more customers, leading to big dis-sat issues. I'm not sure what the plans are for getting the RC0 bits into the hands of our partners, but I've been told that there will be a new VPC image available on Partnersource shortly after RC0 is released. As soon as I hear more details, I'll post them here. Regards, Simon
