CRM “5” Workflow On Channel 9

Right By Your Side…

For those of you who like nothing more than diving into Visual Studio and writing custom workflow activities for CRM, you will enjoy this 25 minute video, which was posted to our Channel 9 developer site a couple of weeks ago. Steve Kaplan (Programme Manager), Gonzalo Ruiz (Developer), and Nirav Shah (Developer) from the CRM product team talk with Ron Jacobs about some of the new workflow investments in CRM “5”.

The key points mentioned are:

  • The workflow capabilities in CRM “5” are built on the Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) in .NET Framework version 4.0.
  • As well as using the built-in workflow designer in the CRM user interface, you will also be able to develop CRM “5” workflows in Visual Studio 2010.
  • Workflows in CRM 4.0 will be migrated automatically to CRM “5” as part of the upgrade process.
  • Running workflow instances in CRM 4.0 will resume at the point they were stopped once the upgrade process has completed.
  • Custom workflow activities written for CRM 4.0 will continue to run in CRM “5” after migration, and will be wrapped by the new WF interop activity.

I should caveat these observations with the fact that CRM “5” is still a long way off, so features may change between now and the final version.
