Stop the insanity: SCCM and WS2008 beta exams

System Center Configuration Manager beta exam

I think we'll post the System Center Configuration Manager beta exam information (71-401) at the end of this month. In the meantime, you can check out the exam objectives on the 70-401 prep guide, which is live as of a few days ago. We talked about dates and process for the betas in the SC cert Live Meeting, so if you need more info please review those slides.

Windows Server 2008 MCTS and MCITP betas

The next betas for WS2008 will be our three MCTS exams (71-640, 71-642, and 71-643), beginning at the end of November (targeting November 27, but please do not get your panties in a bunch if you don't see anything on that very date...). The MCITP exams will beta beginning in (most likely) late December 2007. In both cases, invitations to the betas will go out following our standard process:

  • Microsoft employees notified via internal distribution list (//infoweb/learning)

  • MCTs notified via private MCT newsgroups

  • Customers notified by invitation only (must be registered to MCP newsletter to receive). Customers who hold an MCSA or MCSE on Windows Server 2003 will *most likely* be the people who receive an invite

Eh...btw Trika the MCITP (746 and 747) are do only apply to the MCTS Windows Server 2008 guys and girls, or am I wrong?

Helmer, 746 abd 747 are the pro level exams that allow a suitably prepared individual to complete the MCITP:Server Administrator and MCITP:Enterprise Administrator credentials. It is correct that these exams only apply to those who have complete the MCTS track on Windows Server 2008 in addition to a client exam, either 70-620 or 70-624. Sort of. You can pass -646 or -647 in beta and then go back and pass the other exams and still obtain your credential.  So from that perspective, Microsoft is still getting beta results, I am just not sure they are quality results. Hopefully going back to the standard beta process will permit using the corporate and MCT audiences which provide a more uniform pool from which to obtain feedback both on scoring but also on how the exam fares.

When is MSL adding a 70-351  prep guide? even more...Adding the credential, logo and the ability to request the welcome kit of TS: ISA Server 2006, configuring...ALSO for the WK of 648 and 649 ?

Oh 647 "could" be out this year. How sweat would it be to get that done in 2007 to complete my set of Exams and give myself MCITP EA status.

My concern would be having to do the refresher exams in beta presumably (in 2010)?

Elias, it looks like the prep guide for 351 should have been live today, but I don't see it - but at least we know it is close. RE: your other concerns, per our e-mail thread you know we are working to address those! Will keep you posted. Wayne, nice one. Thansk!

Now that I have a Beta Cert does that mean I can only work on Beta software versions? LOL!!

According to the live meeting 71-401 will go live on 28-11-2007 ... any update on this one?

meh. I'll wait for the exams to go live. I'd rather pay for the exam and know the results right away.

@Skubasteve : Why should you? The Beta exam is FREE and you'll get the score BEFORE the exam is LIVE. The only thing you have to do is to give comments on the exam. And the beta exams are much easier then the final exams (that's what i think)..

    Beta's easier than live exams?  I'd have to disagree.  But there are valid reasons to wait (e.g. final exams are generally shorter, better supported with training materials available, immediate feedback, etc) The exam cost is a relatively small factor in my decision making - if I know a predecessor well and I have the time to play and do what prep I can, I'll go for it.  It's mostly a marketing tool to be the first guy anyone knows certified on {2k8 | SPS | whatever }

The last beta test I took (71-649), it was 3 weeks AFTER the test went live before I knew my results. I won't do that again. Like I said, I'd rather pay for the exam and know the results when I click 'Finish'. I also completley agree with Peter.

@Skubasteve yeah..oke but with other exams I received the score before the exams went live. The 649 was the first exam (for me) where I received the score after the exam went live. The exam cost is indeed a relatively small factor (also in my opinion), because my boss always pays for them...

On the prometric website you can now schedule 71-401. Unfortunately the promotion code TSCCM doesn't work :-/ Can I pay this beta-exam with a voucher? (I have three vouchers left) Or should I wait for the promotion code?

Update: SCCM invite is out now. WS2008 invites will probably go out early next week (trainers via newsgroups and employees via internal announce in advance of that).

I read on the web that some people received an invitation for 71-646 and 71-647. Which people are invited to take these beta's? If you hold all MCSA/MCSE and the three W2K8 MCTS's, will you be invited?

Just out of interest, do we have a rough target date for SCCM/2k8 pro results?  Not chasing but would be handy if it's going to be weeks for us to roughyl know so we don't keep checking every day :)

Just checked, the results for 71-401 are @ Prometric AND already on the MCP Member Site AND on my Transcript. Yes, I've passed 71-400 & 71-401, now let's wait what MCITP for System Center will be coming ...

Yup same here :) Roel in the cert planner do you have an x next to the SCOM requirement for the MCITP Operations Manager?  I'm thinking maybe there's an issue due to when they corrected the cert showing up twice?

Yes, I also have the red X Peter, time for mailing mcphelp again I guess ... But that's the final name then? MCITP Operations Manager? I thought exam 402 would cover for both SCCM and SCOM topics. Ah well, we'll see.
