Extended document format support in Microsoft Office announced

The next release of Office 2007 - Service Pack 2 - which will ship in the first half of 2009 - will include expanded support for document formats including XML Paper Specification (XPS), Portable Document Format (PDF) 1.5, PDF/A and Open Document Format (ODF) v1.1.

With Office 2007 SP2, customers will be able to open, edit and save documents using ODF and save documents into the XPS and PDF fixed formats from directly within the application without having to install any other code. 

Collaboration with the open source community in the ongoing development of the Open XML-ODF translator project on SourceForge.net. will also continue 

Finally the roadmap for the newly ratified International Standard ISO/IEC 29500 (Office Open XML) has been announced. IS29500, which was approved by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in March, is already substantially supported in Office 2007 and the company plans to update that support in the next major version release of the Microsoft Office system, code-named “Office 14.”

    I feel completely cheated by the purchase of a current shipping modern Microsoft product i.e. Office 2007. I hate Microsoft for not supporting ISO 29500 in Office 2007 and making us upgrade to a newer version of Office. I sincerely wish there will an overwhelming outcry now regarding this and Microsoft will reconsider its decision.

    Hi, I'm not sure if I've picked you up correctly, so please let me know. ISO 29500 has just recently been ratified by ISO, and as Office 2007 was launched in January of last year there was no way to include support. As a result additional document formats (ISO 29500, PDF, XPS and ODF) will be included in the next service pack release for Office. Although no details have been announced, typically Service Packs are released as a free download for registered users. Thanks Tom

    No you aren't getting it. Microsoft's press release states that ISO 29500 will only be supported in Office 14, not in Office 2007 SP2. It's only ODF, PDF and XPS that'll be added natively in SP2 for Office 2007. Read carefully or search the net.

    Thanks for letting me know that I'm not getting it. :-) However, the next version of Office, (codenamed O14) Microsoft will update the already substantial support it provides for IS29500, the Open XML specification that was recently approved by ISO/IEC members. We will continue to support the open source software development of translator technology that enables Open XML-ODF conversions in previous versions of Microsoft Office, including Office XP and 2003.
