The dogfood cube appears to be down

I just got an e-mail with this subject line. And amazingly enough it even made some sense to me. But given how utterly ridiculous it is when read literally, it's no surprise how bewildering many outsiders view our industry (especially if it is some unfortunate spouse or partner at some gathering of IT geeks).

This reminds me of a time back in university where one of our compsci courses defined a forest as "zero or more trees". I had a friend who was studying forestry, and you can imagine his reaction.

Anyway, back to work. I hope the catfood octahedron is able to reach a higher altitude.

  We've had a long history in this business for coming up with messages that are meaningful in context and perplexing at best, out of context.
  
  My all time favorite was from when I worked at the Kiewit Computation Center at Dartmouth in the early '80s.  Every once in a while, very bad things happened.  The message that would appear on the blackboard in the main public terminal room (ptr)
