Windows Vista Beta 2 Now Available to the Public!!

Not much to say here except ... "YAY!!!"

You can finally download the Vista Beta 2 bits by enrolling in the Customer Preview Program. Note that the WinFX Runtime Components (needed to run WinFX apps) are automatically installed in this Windows Vista build. Therefore, if you're looking to just run WinFX applications on Windows Vista, installing Vista is all you need to do.

I would strongly suggest using the Get the Beta page to determine what to download and in what order as it covers the different scenarios - such as "I want to develop WinFX apps" , "I want to develop only native (non .NET) apps", etc.

Also note that the links on the Get the Beta page are to the bits that are in alignment with Vista Beta 2.

Enjoy!
Tom

Well... YAY!!!! I've been looking forward to trying out Windows Vista, looks like I'll be doing that this weekend. Thanks for your hard work!!

Btw, since I'm posting, might as well ask this. When you say 'develop native-apps', is that saying you'll be using the old Win32 API, VS using the WinFX one??

M Maner: I don't personally use the Office beta, but almost everyone on my team runs both the Vista and Office betas so the problems seem to have been ironed out. Having said that, remember these are still betas and not RTM products.

I am anxious to try this windows vista beta 2 release.  It's my girlfriend's computer that I presently use and I am hesitant to install this because of that.  She has given me the OK to install it but I don't want to get myself into trouble should it not function properly.
Do I need to format the main drive to install this or is it written as an upgrade to windows xp?

I tried to download the Vista Beta, but it failed, IE quit, and now I can't get back to the page, it says it already gave me my limit of Vista Keys.  I don't need any more keys, I need another opportunity to download it.  Can you change the web page so I can do that?  As a developer, I'd like to take a look at it.  Thanks!

I have both 32 and 64 bit versions running on my PC(X2 4400+/ 2GB /Dual 7800GT(no SLI for vista yet)/ Audigy2ZS), and I find x64 somewhat bugged. I experienced some grafical bugs and Vista drivers being incompatible (not very surprised since it's 64bit), also did not see any performance gain compared to 32bit(actually I think that it runs slower). Other than that I like most of the new features, though it seems that I need to click one or two more buttons to get there(very anoyed) and the only way to make the experience smooth is to disable some security features(which by the way brings security alerts to my taskbar that I also have to stop, making it imposible to monitor the rest of the security features you have built in). Media center on the other side let's you import media from shared drive, but does not let you specify folder inside, so I am forced to redefine my shared resources on my network so I don't import all the images located in program folders and others.
I'll keep testing and posting as I go. I have planned installs on different platforms(notebooks, celerons, onboard graphics and such) and it looks like I'll have to tweak the rest alot to make them somewhat fast.
I also tested on level 3 PC (P4 3.2/ 1GB/ Radeon9800Pro) and was not happy with default settings(graphics were slow)
    Have fun testing....

    Dear Sir,

I have downloaded the Vista beta 2 version. I have also written that on a DVD-R by using a sonic record now 7.3 version. When I start the installation process by clicking on the setup.exe file a small window pops -up saying E:setup.exe is not a valid in Win32 application.

I have downloaded the file onto my drive into a separate folder called vista. It says the file 4 gb and when I go into my computer and look at the DVD-R disc icon it looks like an unrecognised program/format. when I click on the icon it opens all the folders etc, and when I click on the setup.exe  it gives error message as written above.

    Could you kindly help me.

    e-mail: tatituriraju@gmail.com

    Thanks in advance,
    Raju

Vista runs well and is relatively fast.  So far everything works except I cannot install Visual Studio 2005.  The Suite Integration Toolkit exe stops.  The tools for management and performance monitoring are great.  Setting up a small network was a breeze and I especially like the diagram.  All applications I have tried install and work without a hitch including WordPerfect and others.

I have an MSI motherboard with an Athlon 64 processor and two BFG overclocked 6600 GT's, and have not been able to get Vista to load except in safe mode so far (the 64 bit versions up to and including beta 2, and all 32 bit versions up to but not including beta 2, trying that now).  Is Vista prepared for AMD 64 processors, or are there some things that need to be addressed before we test on those types of systems?

    Thanks

I just dnld both the x86 and 64bit versions of Vista build 5384.4 which says it is a dvd.iso file. However the size is only 320mb and 410mb. When I try to copy it to a dvd-r/+r/or +rw it tells me I have the wrong blank and requests a CD-R/RW. When I put the CDR in it says the block size is wrong to correct or ignore. I can only ignore before it will copy. It does finish the copy process.
I then can start the process of installing Vista. It gets all the way to asking for the Key and after I put it in it says that it cannot read the windows image file. I have tried different dvd burners, different cdr burners with both the x86 and 64 versions of the iso file with the same effect.
OK, I have set up several systems in my lab to test these beta versions.  There is probably a very simple explanation as to why I am having trouble with this. Can anyone tell what it is?

I am very excited to have a chance to preview the latest from Microsoft. Unfortunately I am encountering an issue that (if the MS forums are any indicating) are impacting others too.

I am using a DVD ordered directly from Microsoft so that likely rules out issues with ISO or daemon and all that. No matter what I tried, it locks up right after I enter the Product Key. This includes:
    Install from XP SP 2
Install from XP SP 2 in safe mode
    Enable/disable search for updates
    Enable/disable Activation during the Install

I beta tested Windows XP and the installation experience I had was smooth sailing. Usually Microsoft betas are very robust, but lately (e.g., WMP 11) the installation routine itself appears to have issues more akin to an alpha release. If we can't get it on our systems no matter how great the OS is it doesn't do us any good... Microsoft, please help!

Having Windows Vista Beta 2 available for download is nice,
but the fact that it hangs upon installation on both machins, is not  so promising. After "Loading files" it simply hangs in a blue/greenish screen, with only a mouse pointer to move around.

Installed Vista on a brand new pc. Some items take a little longer to find ie sounds are now audio, and no right click properties. No compatible drivers for on board video,so i may install an ATI card and test that. Beautiful looking desktop, and it looks greater on a flat panel monitor. Now if microsoft would only come out with Halo2 for pc,i would be really happy. So much for that, now back to testing this bad boy.

Downloaded, burned, and installed  the x64 version. I'm totally underwhelmed by this release. Performance was dragged down by the VESA graphics driver. My test system is stuck with the generic VESA driver because the manufacturer of the onboard graphics adapter has not released a driver for this OS. (A driver for XP_64 is available so why not one for Vista?) Since this is a Beta 2 and not an Alpha release I expected manufacturers would also have their drivers available for testing. If I had known the about the lack of hardware support I would not have wasted the time downloading this release.

I have an ASP (not an ASP.NET) application accessing Sql Server 2005 database installed in Vista Beta 2 (Build : 5384). I am unable to access my application in server. UAP is blocking my application. I dont want to change system level UAP configuration using msconfig or secpol.msc.
Can any one suggest me some idea to change application level UAP configuration, so that I can access by ASP application.

    Thanks in Advance.

I love it. Have experienced a problem installing a printer but for now I am successfully printing over a network. Thought I had a strong computer but it seems a bit low end with Vista on board. On the plus side it works well, a bit buggy at times, security features are excellent and UI is slick a la Mac OSX but more complex and less friendly. The constant requests for permissions are a bit annoying but my Mac gives me the same grief so all is forgiven. All in all a great product.

And I need to reinstall the Windows SDK every time to "solve" my CPU problem. The CPU problem is very clear when I open Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express....

Firstly, the visual experience in Vista is very pleasing and the installation was very smooth athe first attempt. But, I was utterly frustrated to see that the MSOffice 2007 beta could not be installed. Installation starts smoothly but after some time it declares a error 1935.......... and the it starts rolling back. I tried several times and every time the same thing happens. The matter is reported thru' their problem reporting system and they are yet to submit any solution/update. Same thing happens about updating some of the updates.
Then, there seems to be quite a bit of problem of compatibility of legacy software. Under XP I never felt any problem with any of the earlier software. All the softwares. those were made for XP only, should have been compatible with Vista.
It seems that Microsoft wants that along with the Vista OS one should change the machine (if one wants to exploit the full potential of it) and application softwares. Look and feel are not the last thing; functioning only will show. As somebody commented that he will go in for Vista after may be two years or so.

i think that vista should work well in the 32 bit atrchetecture but will not work properly in the 64 bit architecture due to known issues both hardware & software related.

I am trying to install vista on a system with SCSI drives. Will Vista recognize the drives or I need the drivers for them? Will the drivers used for WInXP or W2K3 work ?
