Tip of the Day: Can't Power on My Surface Pro

Solution #1 – Check for conditions that might prevent charging

  • Check the outlet. Does it work? Plug something else into the outlet to verify.
  • Your Surface Pro was designed to best charge at room temperature. Is your Surface Pro in extreme heat or cold?

Solution #2 – Check the Surface power supply

  1. Disconnect the power supply from the Surface Pro.
  2. Plug the power cord into a working electrical outlet.
  3. Plug a USB device into the USB port on the power supply (for example, use your cell phone).
  4. Ensure that all connections are snug and secure. Check the following:
    1. USB cable and the USB port on the power supply
    2. Power cable and the power supply
    3. Power cable and the electrical outlet

If the USB device doesn’t receive power, it looks as though you will need to replace the power supply.

If the USB device does receive power, continue on to Solution #3.

Solution #3 – Disconnect cords, remove accessories, and check connectors

  1. Unplug the Surface power cord from the electrical outlet, and if you have any of the following attached, remove or disconnect them from the Surface Pro:
    1. Power supply
    2. Surface Cover
    3. microSD card
    4. USB devices: printers, keyboards, mice
    5. Video or audio cables or adapters
  2. Check the magnetic connectors on the power supply’s connector and on the Surface Pro’s charging port (Surface-side). With the power cord unplugged from the outlet, clean the magnets on the Surface Pro’s connector tip and on the charging port with a soft cloth and a SMALL amount of rubbing alcohol.
  3. Reconnect the power supply to the Surface Pro, and:
    1. Plug the power supply  into a working electrical outlet
    2. Connect the magnetic tip of the power connector to the charging port on the Surface Pro
  4. Look at the connector to see if the light is on.
    1. If the light does not turn on, it looks as though you will need to replace the power supply.
    2. If the light does turn on, attempt powering on your Surface Pro.
  5. Press and release the power button on the Surface Pro.
    1. If it turns on, the battery on your Surface Pro is likely still very low. Please continue to charge.
    2. If your Surface Pro does not power on, continue to Solution #4.

Solution #4 – Two-button Shutdown

  1. Press and hold the power button on the Surface Pro for 30 seconds.
  2. Press and hold the volume-up button and the power button on the Surface Pro at the same time for 15 seconds regardless of what may pop up on the screen.
  3. Release both buttons and wait 10 seconds.
  4. Press and release the power button on the Surface Pro to attempt to power it back on.

If at this stage, after completing all provided solutions, your Surface Pro does not power on, it requires service. Open a service request at the Surface Online Service Center.

    My Surface Pro 4 is 4 days old. This seems to be an ongoing problem. sometimes it works....other times...NOT. This is too expensive for me to have a poorly working device. I will have to return it. Too bad...otherwise I love it. If I can get a new one which works..i will do so. Please advise. The "double button turn on solution" is foolish to me. I have to pay $1K..without
    assurance that it will work as it ages? Please advise. Mary Hall
