Networking - How much do you know ?

So I was talking with one of our Technical Product Manager guys today, you might know him or know of his infamy, Mike Hall (https://blogs.msdn.com/mikehall). Anyway we were discussing networking, blogs and what not and he posed a very interesting, basic question: How much do you know about Windows CE networking ?

For example, why would someone implement IPV6 over IPV4 in their device, what is a transport layer, and what can you do with it ? - how compatible are NDIS drivers with the desktop NDIS model ? - What is L2TP and IPSEC, and why would you include these in your Windows CE Embedded device ? - What about power management, and the list goes on...

So, the real question is, how much do you know about Windows CE networking, and how much would you want to know about Windows CE networking ?

Considering that the landscape of networking is in a constant state of flux, it seems that the more that I think that I know, the less relevant and current information I actually do know.

So I started with the basics, IPv4. Got my MCSE in NT 4 learned about DHCP, DNS, WINs along with the basics of RAS and thought that I had networking down pretty good after a bit of practical application. Started studying TCP/IP packet structure, NetMon, ICMP and several other protocols and then I REALLY thought that I knew my stuff.

Then came along IPv6... new packet structure, new headers, security, and a whole new set of ways to try and test it. Same thing happened with wireless, security, on and on. It is constantly changing. Exciting yes, but exhausting.

Keep it coming! All I have is time... :)

I just recently decided to jump on the band wagon and get an ebox with windows ce 5.0. It's incredible how much you can do. File server/web server/vpn/rdp. I am developing utility boxes to help small businesses and looking forward to reading your blog.
