Tech4Good: March 2013 – Women & Technology

In This Issue...

In honour of International Women's Day, observed globally on 8 March, we dedicate this issue to women, showcasing tech solutions and programs that have impacted women's lives. From nonprofits that promote telework to entrepreneurship, maternal and newborn health to women's safety, we recognise the incredible organisations and people who have embraced technology to improve the lives of women, their children and the broader community.

Telework

Teleworking - the ability to do your work remotely through the use of technology - is gaining popularity and is proving to increase productivity, enabling more flexible work scenarios for many women. As nonprofits adopt this model of working, technology plays a critical role in enabling female staff members and those they serve.

Entrepreneurs & Micro-entrepreneurs

Micro-entrepreneurs are people who run a small business, often with only a handful of employees and very low initial capital costs. This type of business is ideal for women entrepreneurs in lower socio-economic brackets around the world because of the low barriers to entry and minimal capital investment. Read about the clever use of technology by nonprofits that enable female micro-entrepreneurs.

Maternal & Newborn Health

According to the Lancet medical journal, every year, more than 500,000 women die from complications of pregnancy and childbirth, and many more are permanently disabled. However, good work is being done to support women in poor communities during childbirth and the postnatal period when the majority of these deaths occur.

Keeping Women Safe

Nonprofits are making strides in protecting women and keeping them safe from physical, economic and environmental harm. We showcase the work of some nonprofits that work tirelessly to better the lives of the women they serve and how technology is used to help achieve that goal.
