SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 Customer Technology Preview Available

Dear Customers,

 

The Microsoft SQL Server Sustained Engineering team is pleased to announce the availability of SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 CTP. Both the Service Pack and Feature Pack updates are available for download on the Microsoft Download Center. Service Pack 1 for SQL Server 2008 R2 includes product improvements based on requests from the SQL Server community, and hotfix solutions provided in SQL Server 2008 R2 RTM Cumulative Update 1 to 6.

Key improvements in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 are:

  • Dynamic Management Views For Increased Supportability
    sys.dm_exec_query_stats DMV is extended with additional columns to improve supportabilities over troubleshooting long-running queries. New DMVs and XEvents on select performance counters are introduced to monitor OS configurations and resource conditions related to the SQL Server instance.

  • ForceSeek For Improved Querying Performance
    Syntax for FORCESEEK index hint has been modified to take optional parameters allowing it to control the access method on the index even further. Using old style syntax for FORCESEEK remains unmodified and works as before. In addition to that, a new query hint, FORCESCAN has been added. It complements the FORCESEEK hint allowing specifying ‘scan’ as the access method to the index. No changes to applications are necessary if you do not plan to use this new functionality.

  • Data-tier Application Component Framework (DAC Fx) For Improved Database Upgrade
    The new Data-tier Application (DAC) Framework v1.1 and DAC upgrade wizard enable the new in-place upgrade service for database schema management. The new in-place upgrade service will upgrade the schema for an existing database in SQL Azure and the versions of SQL Server supported by DAC. A DAC is an entity that contains all of the database objects and instance objects used by an application. A DAC provides a single unit for authoring, deploying, and managing the data-tier objects.   • Disk SpaceControl For PowerPivot
    This update introduces two new configuration settings that let you determine how long cached data stays in the system. In the new Disk Cache section on the Power Pivot configuration page, you can specify how long an inactive database remains in memory before it is unloaded. You can also limit how long a cached file is kept on disk before it is deleted.

    So CU7 is not included in this SP? If a system is already on CU7 - will SP1 still work fine?  Can (and should) CU7 be installed on top of SP1? Thanks!

    Is there actually a released CU7 for SQL 2008 R2?  It would appear that only CU1 through CU6 have been released (see www.sqlsecurity.com/.../Default.aspx as well as description of included updates in the blog posting above) ...

    Tina is correct - GMJ if you check support.microsoft.com/.../981356 this shows all updates and build versions for SQL2008R2 There is a CU7 (under link support.microsoft.com/.../2507770) Will this (and potentially any further CUs) be included when SP1 is released publicly rather than as a CTP?

    Cumulative Update #13 for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 is a requirement to install System Center Configuration Manager 2012 Beta 2 www.shirmanov.com/.../sccm-2012-beta-2-requires-exactly-sql.html

    I think it'd probably work like described here blogs.msdn.com/.../sql-server-2008-sp1-and-cumulative-updates-explained.aspx so if SP1 contains fixes from CU7, then it's ok, but if it's not included then you'll lose them and they'll be out as a CU for 2008 R2 SP1

    A few question about the RBS package in feature pack:

  1. does it require SQL 2008 R2 SP1 to work?
  2. if not required, does it work with SQL 2008 as well? Thanks a lot!

    How about support for Managed Service Accounts? Was this added in a CU? Or will it be part of SP1?

    THANK YOU.... Thank you for posting this blog that clearly outlines SP and CU versions. Previously, all that we had to go on was a SQL Version database maintained by Chris: www.sqlsecurity.com/.../Default.aspx This will help a lot in keeping track of what the most current version is! MD

    hi I want to know that what is difference between service pack 1 and sp1 fratures packs and express. And if we are using enterprise edition which we should install. My requirement is sql server 2008 r2 SP1. I have already installed SQL server 2008 R2. need to install sp1. Appreciate your response.
