Licensing and Pricing for SQL Server Express

We just received a great question requesting information on the pricing and licensing for SQL Server Express when it RTMs.

SQL Server Express will be free to use and redistribute. The only requirement that we have is that you register to redistribute the product. The reason we require registration for redistribution is that we want to ensure that we can get critical security/product information to ISVs/partners if necessary.

Many Thanks,

Corey Thomas, Product Manager for SQL Server Express

I think you should not rely on any action by ISVs in the case of a security problem. I believe the only correct way is to completly integrate this with Windows Update and just generally assume, that you guys have to somehow distribute these patches.

Couldn't agree more. SQL Expres will support Microsoft Update, the broad MS platform providing updates and patches.

From an embedded perspective, is SQL Server Express as costly in terms of memory, other resources as MSDE?

Great to hear that! That leaves the question why you need registration then :)

Still for notification if any issues arise. We'd rather be proactive in telling folks rather than reactive. If we don't have any names to contact, we're in trouble :)
