Benchmark Testing Results: CSC’s Integral P&C Running on SQL Server

CSC’s Integral is a comprehensive insurance administration suite that provides end-to-end policy and group management, product configuration, and business-analytics capabilities. In February and March of 2012, CSC and Microsoft conducted performance and scalability testing on the Integral property and casualty (P&C) software component running on SQL Server 2012 RC 0 Enterprise, SQL Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. The benchmarking tests aimed to simulate the typical daily activities of agents at a large insurer, with up to 1,000 concurrent users running against a database of 1.5 million policies. A variety of tests were performed, including tests with various numbers of users and tests with various numbers of application servers.

The test results were impressive. In a single application server test with 333 concurrent users, the measured throughput was
497 business transactions/minute. For five application servers with 1,000 concurrent users test, the total throughput was 1,952 business transactions/minute. SQL Server performed extremely well in the benchmarking tests, with an average of only 10% CPU utilization (never exceeding 15%  utilization), and using less than 20 GB RAM.
