ConfigMgr 2007: Update on R2 Eval download
Earlier today I posted that R2 is now available but I inadvertently left out one minor detail - The posted download is the eval version only. It clearly states this on the site but I probably should have made that more clear in my post. Sorry to get your hopes up. Also, the R2 Eval requires the Site to be at the SP1 eval version. This will not install on a full SP1 site and you may receive this error:
“You can only install on an SCCM SP1 eval installation"
This is all because R2 is not a free add-on for Configuration Manager and the bits that are available are simply there so the product can be evaluated for a limited time. The error above can actually be viewed as a good thing because it prevents you from installing evaluation bits in a production environment - not a good thing when the expiration date comes around.
Anyway, for the specifics, when you click through to the download page (https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7376214F-CBA3-4E0D-81FE-AD52488BE3A3&displaylang=en) please pay close attention to the System Requirements where this is noted:

It sounds like Microsoft has once again chosen to delay the release of products to paying customers and make them available to non-paying first. Why put the Eval out first? http://computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/tech/8D940CDD41631623CC25743500010720Anonymous

I am a Software Assurance customer. It is really unacceptable for Microsoft to release it to the general public as an evaluation and withhold it from its highest paying customers! This is ridiculous!Anonymous
