Demo: SQL Server Reporting Services – If you work with SQL you need to use this.

So many people don’t seam to be aware of the great [SQL Server Reporting Services] functionality that we released last year as an add-on for SQL Server 2000. I guess when you basically give a product away people have trouble realizing how good it can be at times (I know that for some people it was certainly a blocker when comparing J2EE and .NET – I mean how can something that’s free/cheap be any good? Sic.)

  • Describe the Architecture: Reports designer in VS .NET to design reports, Renderer for reports to different formats (text, DC, PDF, XLS, HTML, …), Reports portal to subscribe and manage reports and show support for any OLEDB and ODBC connection.
  • Build a simple report: with the wizard and deploy it to the server. Showing the power and simplicity of the query builder (like access) and ease of building simple reports. The report designer for SQL Server Reporting Services is based within Visual Studio .Net and is similar (but better) than the Access report writer. It uses a very simple drag and drop metaphor.
  • Show the sample reports: The sample Adventure Works reports that ship with SQL Reporting Services are a great example of what can be achieved.

An important point - how much does it cost:   SQL Server Reporting Services is a free add-on for SQL Server 2000. If you have a SQL Server license for your project then you are also licensed to use this product at no additional cost…
