How do I index network shares in Vista?
It can be done! By default, the search function built into Windows Vista will only search indexing local volumes and directories. You may have some file shares, however, that contain a large number of documents that you would like to rapidly search.
Here is how you enable the Windows Vista instant search to index file shares:
- Download the Add-in for Files on Microsoft Networks to add this support (*Note: this add-in does not work properly on Vista X64 Edition).
- Install, Reboot
- Once installed you can navigate to the Indexing Options control panel / advanced options / and then select the "Add UNC Location" tab to add a new UNC location (ie \\server\share).
- Hit OK, and Windows Vista will now start indexing that share, so you can very rapidly search the contents of files available on the server.

Thanks for this tip, I applied it and I'm quite disapointed even if it works : only the filenames are indexed... not the content of the file... Any idea ? I'm seriously considering to go back to Google Desktop as this feature is extremely important for me...Anonymous
