Did you know... How to have the Solution Explorer always show (or not show) the file currently opened in the Editor? - #161

Since the default is to have the Track Active Item in Solution Explorer enabled in the General Development Settings, the more appropriate tip is either how to turn it back on or to how to turn it off.

On the Tools – Options – Projects and Solutions – General page, there’s the Track Active Item in Solution Explorer.  When enabled, this will sync your solution explorer with the open document.

I still remember how annoyed I was by the tracking feature in VS2002 (yep, I used it) and how glad I was to see it disabled by default in the successors. This sort of bears the question: why was this feature deemed useable? And what happened to the "Sync with/in class view" context menu item? The latter might be an Express SKU or C++ vs C# issue, though...

I've been using this feature for a while.  However, items in a collapsed solution folder in VS2005 are not tracked.  I have to open the root solution folder to get the item to track correctly. Is there a way to get Solution Explorer to expand the solution folder if it contains the active item?

Is there a shortcut to go to the current open document in the solution explorer (like the Track Active Item option but as an "one shot use") ? Thank You Ghislain

Ideally I would love to have the context menu option to sync, but the following works a a decent alternative... You can put the 'Track Active Item' command on your toolbar (by customizing the toolbar...I think this is under View command perhaps I forget). I typically leave it off, but when I want to sync the Solution explorer, I just click the button (which syncs) and then click again to turn it back off.

Ghislain, you should use cool commands to do so: http://geekswithblogs.net/brians/archive/2007/03/04/107922.aspx Now it even works on VS 2008: http://geekswithblogs.net/SoftwareDoneRight/archive/2007/12/12/coolcommands-in-visual-studio-2008.aspx
