Windows Vista Beta 1 Speech Recognition Features

There are many features in Speech Recognition in Windows Vista Beta 1 (and even more in Beta 2 — but I can’t tell you about those yet ). I can, however, tell you about all the cool work we put into Beta 1.

In the spirit of connecting with customers, though, I’d like you, the customers, to tell me what areas you’d like me to discuss first. There are many to choose from.

Here are a few I’d like to tell you about. Let me know what ones are important to you, and I’ll try to cover them first:

  • Set up
    • First time experience
    • Adjusting microphone levels
    • Training the computer to understand your voice
  • Microphone Control
    • Combined Dictation and Commanding mode
    • Volume meter
    • Text feedback
  • Commanding
    • Starting applications
    • Switching between applications
    • Closing applications
    • Controlling UI elements (buttons, menus, etc)
    • Scrolling
    • Emulating Keyboard input
    • Emulating Mouse input
    • Web browsing
    • Playing music
  • Dictation
    • Entering text into applications
    • Correcting text when it’s recognized incorrectly
    • Moving around in the document
    • Teaching the computer new words

Send me a note, and let me know what you’d like to hear about from the above Beta 1 feature list, or ask me any other questions about Beta 2. I’ll answer if I can.
