Dear TechNet Flash reader
Welcome to this week’s TechNet Flash. My name is Bradley Borrows and I am the Product Manager for Windows Server and Tools here at Microsoft New Zealand. I look after the all the Windows Server and Management tools as well as our Server Virtualisation platform.
Right now I spend a large portion of my time speaking to partners and customers about Hyper-V and how it stacks up against VMware. With the upcoming release of Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 it introduces two key new features that I believe will make Hyper-V stand out amongst the various Hypervisor competitors. The upcoming release of SP1 will provide Dynamic Memory and Remote FX capabilities to Hyper-V for the first time.
· Dynamic Memory allows users to distribute physical memory on a host computer to virtual machines that are being hosted on that system, bringing better memory management to Hyper-V environments
· Remote FX provides a set of sophisticated desktop virtualisation functions, which allow for media content, such as video, to be deployed on laptops and desktops
The addition of these two new features brings parity on one feature that was missing from Hyper-V and the addition of a feature that will allow organisations to run CAD like applications to low end or even dumb terminal environments whilst getting high end graphics and performance out of these devices.
The upcoming release of SP1 for Windows Server 2008 R2 will make the virtualisation space a lot more interesting and challenging for IT Pros who need to choose a virtualisation platform.
If IT pro’s wish run Hyper-V in a VMware environment then System Center will provide the tools that will allow IT Pro’s to manage both VMware and Hyper-V until a single set of management tools.
