Some huge announcements followed the Connect(); event this month. In case you missed them they’re available at Channel9. A highlight for some, including our guest editor Seth from PropertyPlot, include updates to Visual Studio Code which is now open sourced. VS Code is free and available to you on your favourite platform - Linux, Mac OSX, and Windows. PropertyPlot is an online property mentor that helps users become more successful property investors. Following the announcement Seth shared his experience with Visual Studio Code. “As an avid VS Code user I am excited to see it go open source. This along with .NET really opens up the Microsoft platform to a whole new audience and hopefully convinces even more people that Microsoft is now committed to embracing the community and collaboration. With support for plugins I look forward to the ecosystem flourish as VS Code gets extended to be even better. I’ve been using VS Code to build out prototypes using Node.js, Express and Angular and cannot rave about it more. With the addition of the new Chrome plugin I can now debug end-to-end with one tool for my front-end and back end JavaScript. No more context switching and no more waiting for my debugger console to open. A complete single language, single editor development experience. One thing I’ve really enjoyed about getting in on VS Code from day one is seeing how it has evolved and getting the chance to learn all the features as they are released. Typescript support, code completion, snippets, node debugging, Git integration and much more all built right into a simple, lightweight text editor. Even as I move a lot of my backend code into .NET I have no plans to give up my favourite front-end text editor: VS Code”

Have a startup on the side? Lightning Lab is a four month accelerator programme that supports early-stage tech startups, providing the funding, networks and expertise to help accelerate their growth. Applications are now open and will close on December 18, 2015. The programme will run in Auckland from March – July, 2016.
