Q&A: Would a 3G iPhone be better for you?

I got a question yesterday in response to my thoughts after living with push Exchange on my iPhone for awhile:

Do you think your experience would be better if you had upgraded to the v2 hardware?

The short answer: No.

The long answer: All of the improvements that I really want for the iPhone are ones that can be addressed in software. I suppose it's possible that I'm hitting up on EDGE speed issues when I'm on a deleting spree in a mailbox, but even that seems like it's fundamentally a software issue. If I delete something and, for whatever reason, the phone can't connect to the server to take the action suggested, the change should be queued and uploaded on next sync.

For me, the iPhone 3G isn't compelling enough to jump off of my original iPhone. The speed increase would be nice, but not so nice that I feel the need to upgrade. The single biggest hardware improvement that I foresee that could convince me to upgrade would be more storage.

If you want GPS and 3G, the iPhone 3G is worthwhile. If you are only looking for push email and custom apps, the 2G works just fine.
