Q&A: Entourage 2008 and Exchange

I got a question via email this morning:

I have Office 2008 Home and Student Edition for my Mac. I screwed up and bought it instead of the full-blown version knowing now that I can not hook it up to my firm's Exchange server.

Office 2008 Home and Student Edition doesn't include Exchange support, since most home users and students don't need Exchange support. If you need Exchange support, you need to get either Office 2008 Standard Edition (which also adds in Automator actions) or Special Media Edition (which has everything in Standard, plus Microsoft Expression Media).

If you're a student who needs it to access your university mail, talk to your university about how you can get a copy of it. If you want to access your corporate Exchange server from home, ask your employer (probably the IT department) whether they take part in Microsoft's Home Use Program. Both of these are inexpensive options to be able to access your Exchange server with Entourage.

None of these options are great if you use a hosted exchange service, especially now that the CALs don't include seat licences for the software, and it seems impossible to buy Entourage 2008 on its own. (Entourage is the only Office 2008 app that I need or want to use, the rest of the suite is a total waste of money for me.)

You're correct, Entourage isn't available as a standalone app.  The hosted Exchange point is a good one, I'll mention that to the folks who manage our licensing stuff.

It is ridiculous that Exchange support is not available in the Student edition, or any editions for that matter. Are there versions of Outlook for Windows without Exchange support?

Windows Office has many more versions than we do, and I'm not going to claim to know what's in which version.  So I can't really answer your question. That said, I do know that their Home and Student Edition doesn't include Exchange support, either -- because Outlook isn't included in that version at all.
