Problems viewing MSDN Webcasts

I hear that some folks had problems viewing MSDN Webcasts lately, and I apologize for the inconvenience caused by this. We did turn registration on for all our on –demand webcasts starting in August. This was a bit confusing to folks as in the past we just pasted the live meeting access link directly into registration site. However, despite that even after some customers have registered for the on –demand webcast, they get “ms events is experiencing technical difficulties”. So far we think it’s part of users having a corrupt passport account issue. If you do have this problem, try these steps first:

1.) Clear your browser cache; and check your cookies settings. I’m told you do need a session cookie for registering for Microsoft events.

2.) Recreate a new passport account and try registering again for MSDN Webcasts.

I agree this is not ideal, but it may help you out in the interim while our support team tries to figure out the optimal soluton going forward. Let me know if you have other problems or questions with watching MSDN Webcasts. Happy to talk and help anyway I can.

The "optimum solution going forward" is to remove this registration requirement for on-demand webcasts.

Do you want people to use your web casts or not?

If you do, why force them to waste time registering?

I can understand the need for people to register for sites that need advertising income that is based on registered users but MS sites don't have advertising.

I couldn't download webcasts using the NetTransport instructions. I tried replacing mms with http at the front of the url, and it worked! A very short http download was automatically followed by the mms download on port 80.

I can't say that I understand what's going on here, but it works for me. The strange thing is that I can't just specify mms on port 80, I have to do the http step first.

    Good Morning Mike,

Mainly because on a large we don’t know what folks are interested in seeing. We run focus groups to gather information, but when we hold webcasts based on that feedback, we don’t see anyone attending it. While we can see which webcasts are being downloaded the most, it difficult to determine which solutions are important for different companies and industries. When we do turn registration on and see what folks are coming and from what companies, we can better see what webcasts are of importantance to developers from companies from small, medium and large business. Based on that we try to host more webcasts similar to those that are being viewed. Our content and host of speakers are decided by what our viewers vote on and register to see.

Thanks for taking the time to provide this feedback.

    Regards,

    George

I forgot to say that you need to have port 1755 open for this. That's the port that MMS uses, so you'll need to make sure it’s open before trying to download any webcasts.
