MSDE issues when installing the MS CRM Laptop Client
I guess we all run into Customers that have had MSDE databases on there system or perhaps are upgrading or used Business Contact Manager. They almost always have one thing in common and that is the fact that the MSDE isn't removed in a proper way.
The bad thing is that you run into those issues just before or when you are already doing a Laptop Client installation. So for example if you experience a problem when you try to remove an MSDE 2000 instance by using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, you can manually remove the instance instead. To manually remove MSDE 2000, follow the procedure described in this knowledgebase article:

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

You may also have to reinstall MDAC after manually removing MSDE. I had to do that myself before I could get the install to work.Anonymous
