NSBE 19th Annual Employer Preference Survey - Microsoft #1

From their article, it states that today's engineers want a job that requires more than suiting up and showing up for the next 30-odd years. And with Microsoft Corporation, many say, they're getting it. The software pioneer, a technological innovator since its founding in 1975, is renowned for providing an environment that supports employee contribution and growth and thrives on a diversity of ideas. Considering that reputation, maybe it's not so surprising that, after riding a close second behind IBM Corporation from 2000 through 2006 that Microsoft edged out Big Blue for the No. 1 ranking in this year's National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Employer Preference Survey.

Microsoft Founder and Chair Bill Gates' ability to take sound risks appeals to a generation of young engineers who are not only "book smart" but also confident in their ability to make a difference in the workplace. These young professionals expect to be heard and don't intend to keep their heads down to preserve their jobs. And, most important, they expect a work environment that's both challenging and, well, fun. And Microsoft gets it.

As we say in our events with all of you, it's all about your most valuable asset-the people. Start there and the outcome can only be positive. We practice what we preach and surveys such as these help Microsoft know that we are on track. We can't ask you to have a people-ready business if we are not doing it ourselves. As it is said in several environments, "Success breeds success"; let's make it spread like a virus.
