Visual Studio 2008 and .NET Fx 3.5 Service Pack 1 Beta

You'll know by now that we've shipped the first beta of Visual Studio 2008 and .NET Fx 3.5 Sp 1 and it contains some elements of what was previously known as the ASP.NET 3.5 Extensions Preview. In my recent post about my roadshow session, I talk about where to get the various bits (MVC, Dynamic Data, Silverlight Controls, AJAX History). Sp 1 changes things somewhat.

Service Pack 1 includes Dynamic Data and the AJAX History support (amongst many other things). It does not include the MVC framework or Silverlight Controls. See my earlier post for where to get these.

If you just want to play with Dynamic Data and / or AJAX History support then by all means install Service Pack 1 to get the latest bits (but there are some things to be aware of on top of the usual "don't install on a production machine" warnings. eg you need to uninstall Silverlight Tools for Visual Studio. See ScottGu's blog post for full details).

If, however, you want to play with MVC and / or Silverlight controls then things aren't quite so straightforward. The Silverlight controls are going to be problematic because of the issue mentioned above. The MVC Preview 2 *may* be problematic with this release (I'm guessing it will be as it doesn't play well with the Dynamic Data 0823 release - you need to stick with the 0804 release for now. See my blog post for more details).

Given the issue with the Silverlight Tools, I'm not in a position to install Fx 3.5 Sp1 for now so I'm not able to test the MVC scenario. I expect refreshes of both the Silverlight Tools and MVC framework in the near future so you may be better holding off until then if the Silverlight and MVC bits are of interest to you.
